Program Description

The Weatherization program provides services to low income persons in our three county area. Weatherization is a service designed to reduce energy bills and provide a comfortable environment for low income people who rent or own their home. Each household that applies is evaluated to determine where air leakage and energy usage can be minimized. Each home has a unique set of needs and services. One house we evaluated recently only needed additional insulation in the ceiling to increase comfort and reduce heating and cooling bills. Another house needed a new door and some windows repaired and lots of caulking around the baseboards and under the sink to reduce air flow. An elderly client in the Commerce area reported that she can now sit in the living room and not feel air blowing around her. By reducing energy bills, the individual has more expendable income for other necessities. This program also assesses health and safety of the home by measuring such hazards as carbon monoxide and the presence of mold. Some minor repairs can be performed if recommended by the NEAT or MHEA audit. This program assists the agency to maintain and develop decent, safe and affordable homes for eligible individuals and families.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Weatherization Assistance Program individuals and families must qualify as low income. The current income guidelines are less than 60% of the State Median Income. This includes income of all individuals who live in the home. Each family is assigned a priority rating which gives priority points to the elderly, the disabled and families with small children.
